The Buddha - after several months of self-deprivation and denying all worldly desires including the need to eat - realised that a comfortable mind starts with a comfortable body. The mind will not be able to reach a state of bliss and emptiness if physical pain and suffering are present. Which confirms my belief to keep our body healthy. This includes not only the right food, but also movement and strengthening of the body. Balancing and unblocking energies within the body and allow the mind to rest. Essentially, yoga asana practice prepares the body to sit in meditation for an extended period of time. Which would not be possible with a body that holds tension, is too weak or imbalanced.
What does Yoga mean to me?
Yoga for me offers a wonderful withdrawal from what I call my daily life. The chores. The thinking. The doing. And that’s how I fell in love with the practice. A moving meditation and slow dance that reaches its peak in Savasana as I let my entire being sink into a state of bliss. And I love the little side effect of a healthy body and mind allowing me to live my life to its fullest potential - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I’m a pretty chilled out person by nature, but yoga has taken that to the next level and there is no such thing as too chilled out, right?
So, what is yoga? It's not just a physical workout - I'm sure you've heard this phrase before. That's because it's true. It's about quieting your mind, finding your inner peace and being able to go back to that space in your daily life. Although I don't deny the wonderful physical benefits of a regular yoga practice - they are some of the reasons I practice yoga - there is so much more to yoga. There is the breath, the calmness of the mind, the connection with your Self and the Divine or the Universe. A connection that allows you to live your life happier, simpler and full of joy. You start to live in the moment and trust the abundance of the universe. And you know that you are always exactly where you need to be. Which can be on your yoga mat doing asana practice, making a healthy meal with food from your garden or a lovely catch-up with a friend. Every moment you live and every breath you take becomes so much more present and mindful and that's thanks to the practice of yoga.
